Plaza de las Piñuelas/Foro de los Balbos - 4 min

This square offers a complete view of the Foro de los Balbos, with its old pillar of San Francisco and the statue of the Androgynous Genius, popularly known by the Cacereños (people from Cáceres) as "Goddess Ceres". Right at the back of our picture, we will be able to observe the tower of the Yerba, of Arab origin.

Adarve de La Estrella and Adarve de Santa Ana - 4 min

From the Arco de la Estrella, the gateway par excellence to the old part of the city, we enter an area known as the Adarve de Cáceres, an interior road that used to run along the wall, now a circular street. The only original gate that belonged to the Roman wall, and through which the route of La Plata (Silver Way) entered the city, is the Puerta del Cristo (Christ's Gate). The Adarve leads us to an obligatory walk through the Old Jewish Quarter.

Plaza de San Jorge - 6min

The Plaza de San Jorge surprises the visitor with its stone altarpiece made up of the church of San Francisco Javier, an 18th-century Baroque construction and the convent of the Compañía de Jesús from the same century and the current Palacio de Exposiciones de San Jorge (San Jorge Exhibition Centre). On its right bank is the Casa de los Becerra, a Gothic style building from the 15th century, with a semicircular façade bearing the emblems of the Paredes, Ribera, Becerra and Orellana families.

Garden of the Ulloa – 6 min

This tiny and charming garden, perfect for having a tea or coffee, is located in the heart of the monumental centre, in the old town of Cáceres, in the Plaza de San Jorge. Despite the antiquity of the surrounding environment, the origin of the garden is quite recent. In 1962, Cristina Ulloa, the wife of the then-mayor of Cáceres, Alfonso Díaz de Bustamante, died in a traffic accident. The event caused great consternation and pain in Cáceres, and some town councillors took the initiative to dedicate this space to the memory of the illustrious lady.

Carvajal Palace - 6 min

Located in Amargura street, it was erected between the 15th and 16th centuries. It is a building with Gothic and Renaissance elements, its main façade follows the typology of Caceres palaces, with granite masonry. The semicircular arch façade stands out, with large voussoirs reaching down to the ground, Carvajal's coat of arms in large dimensions, framed in an alfiz and a corner balcony with a pointed arch. Inside the house, there is a rectangular cloister with arches on columns. Also noteworthy is its round tower, from the 12th century, made of ashlar, and at its base there are some interesting frescoes belonging to the chapel of the building. Its garden, in which the fig tree stands out, is a clear example of the interior green spaces that can be found today in these buildings of the Monumental City.

Plaza de Santa María - 6min

The Plaza de Santa María is the nerve centre of Cáceres. It is located very close to the Arco de la Estrella, a few metres from the Episcopal Palace and the Palacio de los Golfines de Abajo, currently Fundación Tatiana Pérez de Guzmán El Bueno. In it is the Santa María Cathedral, which was the first Christian temple to be built after the Reconquest.

Sande Tower – 10 min

Next to the Plaza de San Mateo we find a high Gothic-style tower, almost entirely covered by a beautiful ivy, which gives it an unusual and unique appearance and makes it stand out for its intense green or reddish colour, depending on the season of the year in which it is visited. Like other palace towers in Cáceres, the Torre de Sande (Sande Tower) was demolished by order of the Catholic Monarchs, and its roof rests directly on the walls. The tower must have been even more impressive when topped with battlements. At its base, there is a restaurant with the same name.

Palace of the Veletas – 10 min

This building dates from the 16th century and stands on the remains of a 12th-century cistern, where the old Almohade Alcazar used to be. The Cáceres Museum is now located in the palace and is connected to the horse house by a small bridge, with the intention of creating a continuation of the museum. The cistern is considered, along with the wall, one of the most outstanding patrimonies that refer to the Muslim presence in Cáceres.

Olive grove of the Jewry – 12 min

This park is located in the Jewish quarter, on the eastern flank of the Cacereña wall. Overlooking the Ribera del Marco, the Sierra de la Mosca and Calle San Roque, this green corner of the city was inaugurated in 2002 along with the Baluarte de los Pozos. Its name is due to the numerous olive trees and its location in the old Jewish quarter of the old city, known as 'Barrio de San Antonio'. From its interior, you can contemplate part of the wall, as well as the Adosada Tower. Its access is on Calle Hernando Pizarro.
